Carolina Panthers sign rookie quarterback Matt Corral to deal
It took all offseason but the Panthers will have their third-round rookie quarterback signed ahead of training camp starting this week.
The Panthers and quarterback Matt Corral have agreed to terms on his rookie deal, the team announced Monday. The deal is a four-year contract worth about $5 million with a fifth-year option, according to Spotrac.
Corral was the last of six Panthers rookies to agree to terms. He was one of only seven rookies who remained unsigned.
Panthers rookies and veterans report to training camp on Tuesday. Corral is expected to compete for the No. 3 quarterback spot with P.J. Walker. Carolina traded for Baker Mayfield earlier this month, and the team said Mayfield will vie for the starting job with Sam Darnold.
Corral had a sharp summer competing in OTAs and minicamp. But he admitted new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo’s system is complex and challenging to learn. He’ll enter training camp with low expectations as he continues transitioning to the NFL.
The Panthers traded their fourth-round pick (No. 137) and their 2023 third-round pick to the New England Patriots for pick No. 94 in this year’s draft and took Corral out of Mississippi. Carolina considered Corral among the top three quarterbacks in this year’s draft class.
In 2021, Corral threw for 3,342 yards, rushed for 614 and totaled 31 touchdowns.
