Panthers sign new kicker after losing Zane Gonzalez to season-ending injury
The Panthers have found their new kicker.
Carolina is signing veteran place kicker Eddy Pineiro to a one-year deal, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. Pineiro spent last season with the New York Jets, making eight field goal tries and nine extra points in five games.
Pineiro has history with Panthers special teams coordinator Chris Tabor. The two worked together in Chicago during the 2019 season.
Over his two year NFL career, Pineiro has made 86.1 percent of his kicks. He has played in 21 games, made 31 of 36 kicks, and 36 of 39 extra points. He is three-for-three on 50-plus yard tries, six of 10 on kicks between 40 and 49 yards and has only missed one kick under 39 yards.
The team signed Pineiro after placing kicker Zane Gonzalez on injured reserve on Tuesday. Gonzalez hurt his groin during the preseason finale and is out for the season.
