Carolina Panthers-New Orleans Saints live updates: Jaycee Horn INT seals Carolina win

The Panthers (0-2) host the New Orleans Saints (1-1) on Sunday, an early but critical NFC South matchup amid what’s been a tough beginning to quarterback Baker Mayfield’s tenure in Carolina.

The Charlotte Observer will have several journalists, including Panthers beat writer Ellis Williams, at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte to send along updates, highlights, analysis and more as the action unfolds.

Live updates will be posted below and will be published frequently during the game. Refresh this page for the latest news.

What is the Carolina Panthers vs. New Orleans Saints score?

Jaycee Horn interception seals win

The second-year cornerback out of South Carolina notched a game-sealing interception with eight seconds left. That prompted a Baker Mayfield kneel and a Carolina Panthers 22-14 win over the New Orleans Saints.

Saints WR Marquez Callaway pulls game within striking distance

Saints quarterback Jameis Winston led a three-play, 90-yard drive that took only 1:06 to rejuvenate this Saints team that desperately needed a score. It’s now 22-14 with 2:22 remaining.

The ensuing onside kick attempt fails, and the Panthers take over from their own 46.

Panthers’ Jaycee Horn, Derrick Brown in the mix on INT; sets up FG

The big plays keep coming for this Carolina defense. Jaycee Horn, blitzing untouched off the right side, gets in Saints quarterback Jameis Winston’s face and tips a pass, which sends the ball floating in the air and into the diving hands of defensive lineman Derrick Brown.

That’s the second takeaway for a Carolina defense that didn’t have one at all in the 2022 season coming into Sunday.

Seven short plays later, Eddy Pineiro is good once more from 34 yards out to extend Carolina’s lead, 22-7, with 8:19 left in the game.

Panthers respond with huge Laviska Shenault Jr. TD

If only it could look that easy all the time. New Panthers wide receiver addition Laviska Shenault Jr. took a bubble screen 67 yards to the house on the second play of the Panthers’ opening drive of the fourth quarter. That’s the first offensive touchdown for the Panthers on the day and extends the Panthers’ lead to 19-7 (after a failed two-point conversion).

Quarterback Baker Mayfield only had 76 yards passing prior to that toss. His stat-line looks a bit better now: 10-of-21 for 143 yards and a touchdown.

Mark Ingram TD puts points on board for Saints

It took 48 minutes, but the New Orleans Saints are finally on the scoreboard. Running back Mark Ingram ran in a touchdown from five yards out to end an 89-yard, 10-play drive that took 3:28 off the clock. The Saints have been beholden to some tough luck thus far — to the tune of one blocked field goal, one missed field goal and a fumble-turned-defensive-touchdown for the Panthers.

That makes it 13-7, Carolina still leads, with 12:35 left in the game.

Missed Saints FG keeps them scoreless

The Panthers continue to cash-in their good fortune. Veteran Saints kicker Will Lutz misses a field goal from 48 out, and the Panthers begin their first drive of the second half in good field position. After a big rush from Christian McCaffrey, there’s 6:14 left in the third quarter. Still 13-0, Carolina leads.

HALF: Panthers lead Saints, 13-0, after blocked FG late

Fantasy football owners who have started the Panthers as their defense/special teams this week are... well, pleasantly surprised. Carolina blocked a New Orleans field goal attempt with about 20 seconds left in the second quarter to send the Saints into the locker room scoreless. Carolina defensive end Henry Anderson notched the block.

This adds to an already productive day for the defense and special teams, which currently account for all 13 of Carolina’s points.

Some halftime stats:

  • 3rd down efficiency: Panthers 1-6 (17%); Saints 3-8 (38%)
  • Total yards: Panthers 101 yards; Saints 162 yards
  • Quarterbacks: The Panthers’ Baker Mayfield is 7-of-13 for 44 yards. The Saints’ Jameis Winston is 9-of-17 for 112 yards — a bulk of those coming off a 49-yard pass to Chris Olave.
  • Running backs: The Panthers’ Christian McCaffrey has taken 11 carries for 49 yards. The Saints’ Alvin Kamara has notched eight rushes for 37 yards and a fumble (which was recovered by the Panthers and taken to the end zone).

Another Eddy Pineiro FG: Panthers lead Saints 13-0

The Panthers kicker stays perfect on the year with another field goal, extending Carolina’s lead to 13-0 over NFC South rival New Orleans. This one was from 48 yards out, ending a 10-play, 52-yard drive that took 5:36 off the clock. The Saints begin from their own 20 with 2:50 left to play in the half.

Pineiro is now 6-for-6 on field goals and 5-for-5 on extra points. That’s 23 points for the kicker, who replaced Zane Gonzalez after he sustained a season-ending groin injury in the preseason.

Eddy Pineiro FG: Panthers lead Saints, 10-0

The Panthers extend their lead with 14:16 left in the second quarter. Eddy Pineiro knocks in a 45-yard field goal to punctuate a 10-play, 40-yard drive to extend the score to 10-0. The drive was among the longest of the year for Carolina (5:10).

Another note: Tight end Ian Thomas was on a table on the sideline, getting his ankle wrapped in tape. Donte Jackson , with a neck injury hasn’t yet returned to action after heading to the sidelines in the middle of the first quarter.

Panthers TD: Frankie Luvu jars loose an Alvin Kamara fumble

The Panthers’ first takeaway of the year was about as fruitful as possible. Outside linebacker Frankie Luvu stripped Saints running back Alvin Kamara, and the fumble was scooped up by defensive end Marquis Haynes Sr., and he took it 44 yards into the end zone. 7-0, Panthers lead, with 5:22 left in the first quarter.

The Panthers had been on a five-game streak with no turnovers caused, having also not gotten a turnover in the final three games of the 2021 season.

Panthers’ Donte Jackson in medical tent

We’re scoreless with 7:20 left in the first quarter. Panthers and Saints exchange punts — the Saints’ drive stymied by an inopportune chop-block penalty from running back Mark Ingram. Among the consequential things that’s happened thus far involve cornerback Donte Jackson, who slowly trudged off the field holding his right shoulder on the first defensive possession for the Panthers. Jackson entered the tent after getting looked at on the sideline for a while.

Who won the coin toss?

The Saints won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. The Panthers start with the ball on their own 26. Kickoff was at 1:02 p.m.

Panthers-Saints inactive players

The Panthers’ inactive players include wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr., who is still struggling to make a dent in the wide receiver rotation. New wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. is active for the first time and will be an option as a kickoff returner this week. Cornerback Donte Jackson is also active, so the Panthers have their top three cornerbacks today.

For the Saints, quarterback Jameis Winston is dealing with an injury but active. Running back Alvin Kamara is expected to play. However, backup quarterback and jack of all trades Taysom Hill is inactive.

For the Panthers, running back Christian McCaffrey is active and will play, as expected.

Other Panther inactives are new running back Raheem Blackshear, linebacker Arron Mosby, offensive lineman Cade Mays and defensive linemen Phil Hoskins and Amare Barno.

What are the Panthers jerseys today?

Carolina is decked out in their white jerseys with black pants and silver helmets. The Saints have on their away black jerseys and gold pants.

Weather forecast says it’ll be dry for kickoff

It’s a bit overcast here in Charlotte a few hours before kickoff (10:50 a.m.), hovering at just about 70 degrees, but it’s dry. (Fall is back!) Local forecasts indicate it’ll stay dry through most of the game, with chances for showers rising to 90% by 4 p.m.

Panthers share Charlotte sports stage today with Presidents Cup

There’s another big show in town today. The final day of competition at the Presidents Cup, a made-for-TV international golf tournament, will take place at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte Sunday afternoon. The U.S. team held an 11-7 advantage over the International team entering the final day, with 12 singles matches on tap.

Thousands have already descended on the course this week/weekend. Among those fans include Panthers QB Baker Mayfield and Panthers punter Johnny Hekker, who made an appearance on Friday.
