Panthers will be without a key receiver on Sunday against the 49ers: Injury report
The Carolina Panthers will be without one of their top playmakers Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.
Wide receiver Laviska Shenault will not play, the team announced Friday. Shenault is dealing with a hamstring strain he sustained in the Panthers’ Week 4 loss to the Cardinals. He entered last week dealing with a pulled hamstring in his other leg.
His absence means receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. will likely be active for the first time in two weeks.
“Terrace would have been (active) this week regardless,” coach Matt Rhule said. “He has had three weeks of some of his best practices.”
Carolina will also be without cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver III (thigh) and tight end Stephen Sullivan. Thomas-Oliver was dealing with an Achilles injury the past few weeks, as well.
The Panthers could be uncomfortably thin in the secondary this week. Safety Xavier Woods has not practiced all week. He is battling a hamstring injury but is listed as questionable. Rhule said Woods will be a game-time decision.
Safety Jeremy Chinn was placed on injured reserve on Monday. He’ll miss at least four weeks with a hamstring injury.
Carolina signed safety Juston Burris from the practice squad. He could be in line for a lot of snaps if Woods cannot play. The team will also rely on Myles Hartsfield and Sean Chandler to play safety.
Linebacker Frankie Luvu was limited on Friday after not practicing Thursday. Luvu has an ailing shoulder injury he has been playing through. He is listed as questionable, but is expected to play. Fellow linebacker Shaq Thompson was not listed on the injury report. He will play Sunday.
Defensive end Marquis Haynes was listed on Friday’s injury report with a knee injury. However, he was a full participant. He does carry a questionable game status, but the team is confident he will play.
