Panthers sign linebacker off Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad, make several practice squad moves
The Carolina Panthers have added a young defender to their 53-man roster ahead of the Week 7 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Bank of America Stadium.
Tuesday, the Panthers signed linebacker Chandler Wooten off the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad, the team announced. Ironically, the Panthers opened up a roster spot for Wooten by trading wideout Robbie Anderson to the Cardinals for a pair of draft picks.
Wooten, an Acworth, Ga., native who played at Auburn, went undrafted this offseason and spent his rookie training camp with the Cardinals before signing with the Arizona practice squad.
Listed as 6-foot-3 and 232 pounds, Wooten can provide depth at linebacker for the Panthers, who are dealing with some injuries at the position. Starting linebacker Frankie Luvu missed the past two games with a shoulder injury and his replacement, Cory Littleton, left Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Rams with a groin injury.
Wooten produced 139 tackles (9.5 for loss), two interceptions and five pass breakups during his college career at Auburn, according to the school’s website.
Along with the Wooten signing, the Panthers announced a handful of practice squad moves.
The team released running back John Lovett, tight end Josh Babicz and defensive end Austin Larkin from the practice squad. Running back Spencer Brown, defensive tackle Raequan Williams and outside linebacker Delontae Scott were then signed to fill those three open spots.
Brown, an Alabama-Birmingham alum, spent the entire offseason with the Panthers before being waived with an injury designation ahead of final cuts. He spent last year on the Panthers’ practice squad as an undrafted rookie.
Williams spent his first two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, appearing in seven games between 2020 and 2021. He joined the Jacksonville Jaguars this offseason, and spent some time on their practice squad earlier this year.
Scott appeared in two games earlier this season for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He joined the Steelers in 2021 after spending his rookie season on the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad in 2020.
