Panthers agree to terms on rookie deal with third-round pick DJ Johnson before minicamp
The Panthers have agreed to terms with a third member of their five-man draft class.
On Wednesday, the team reached a deal with third-round pick, pass rusher DJ Johnson, ahead of Friday’s annual rookie minicamp. Johnson’s agreement follows deals for fourth-round pick, guard Chandler Zavala, and fifth-round pick, defensive back Jammie Robinson.
The terms of Johnson’s deal were not immediately released, but the length of the contract will be for a standard four-year pact.
Carolina traded the 93rd overall and 132nd overall picks — both acquired in the Christian McCaffrey trade with the San Francisco 49ers — to the Pittsburgh Steelers to acquire the No. 80 pick in the third round. The Panthers then used that select Johnson.
The Oregon Ducks product collected 64 tackles, nine sacks and two pass breakups during his college career. Listed as 6-foot-4 and 260 pounds, Johnson ran a 4.49-second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine in February.
With Johnson, Zavala and Robinson set with their respective contracts, all three rookies should be able to be used freely during the upcoming minicamp.
First-round pick, quarterback Bryce Young, and second-round pick, wide receiver Jonathan Mingo, have yet to reach agreements with the Panthers. However, both are expected to take part in this weekend’s rookie minicamp.
