Brian Burns is ditching his No. 53 jersey ahead of the first training camp of the Frank Reich era.

Burns, who is recovering from offseason ankle surgery, will be the first player in Panthers history to wear the No. 0. Carolina announced the jersey number swap on Wednesday.

The NFL passed a new rule this offseason that allows non-linemen to wear the No. 0. Several players on other teams have decided to make the switch as a result, with Burns — now listed as an outside linebacker — being the latest to make the move.

The two-time Pro Bowler has worn No. 53 since his rookie season in 2019. The former first-round pick has produced 38 sacks in his four NFL seasons while wearing the double-digit number. Burns, 25, previously wore No. 99 at Florida State during his college career.

Burns — who is set to play on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract — has been attending workouts throughout organized team activities. However, he has yet to take part in any drills because of the April procedure on his ankle.

Still, new outside linebackers coach Tem Lukabu recently said that Burns has still made his presence felt on the practice field and in the meeting rooms.

“Brian’s been great,” Lukabu said. “He’s been a really good vocal leader. He’s been doing what he can do without getting the reps right now.”

Burns is eligible for a contract extension and the Panthers’ brass — specifically general manager Scott Fitterer — has expressed confidence that a deal will be worked out in the future. Burns is expected to participate in drills during training camp, which could lead to contract extension talks picking up steam.
