Panthers roster move: Carolina signs former Jaguars quarterback
The Panthers have added a fourth signal-caller to their depth chart.
Ahead of the team’s Saturday practice at Gibbs Stadium on the campus of Wofford College, the team announced it signed quarterback Jake Luton.
Luton, 27, was signed less than 24 hours after the team waived running back Tiyon Evans.
The former Oregon State quarterback will wear No. 16. He will take on practice reps behind starter Bryce Young, veteran backup Andy Dalton and last year’s third-round pick Matt Corral.
Luton was a 2020 sixth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars. He appeared in and started three games as a rookie as the NFL had constantly shuffling rosters during the COVID-19 pandemic. During that string of games, Luton threw for 624 yards, two touchdowns and six interceptions. He completed 54.5% of his passes.
Since his rookie season, Luton has bounced around. He’s been part of the practice squads for the Jaguars, Seattle Seahawks, Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints. He hasn’t appeared in a game since his rookie season. The Panthers’ roster is back at the 90-man limit.
