The Carolina Panthers (0-2) officially ruled out rookie quarterback Bryce Young (ankle) Friday for Sunday’s Week 3 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks (1-1).

Veteran backup Andy Dalton will start in Young’s place. Dalton has started 162 games during his 13-year career, including 14 games last season. Dalton has thrown for 38,150 yards, 244 touchdowns and 144 interceptions, and has an 83-77-2 record as a starter.

Panthers head coach Frank Reich praised Dalton’s talent and called him a competitor following Friday’s practice. Reich also said that Young could be sidelined for one or two weeks with his ankle injury, according to doctors. But there is a chance that Young could play in Week 4 against the Minnesota Vikings, per Reich.

Young will travel will with the team to Seattle, the head coach said.

Jake Luton, who was re-signed to the practice squad this week, will serve as Dalton’s backup in Seattle. Luton hasn’t thrown a regular-season pass since his rookie season in 2020. He went 0-3 during his outings as a starter during that campaign.

Luton spent the majority of training camp and the entire preseason with the Panthers this summer before being released during final cuts earlier this month. Reich praised the chemistry of the quarterback room and said he was glad Luton was back.

Young wasn’t alone on the final injury report. Edge rusher Justin Houston (calf) was listed as questionable entering the matchup against Seattle. However, Reich said he is confident Houston will play. If that outlook were to change, Yetur Gross-Matos and Amare Barno would seemingly fit into a fallback plan.

Fellow pass rusher Brian Burns (ankle) and running back Miles Sanders (pectoral) were left off the final injury status report for the week. Both players are expected to play on Sunday.
