Carolina Panthers

Carolina Panthers claim CB with front office ties off waivers from the Houston Texans

The Panthers added a veteran cornerback to their depth chart on Thursday.

Carolina claimed former Seattle Seahawks and Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Shaquill Griffin off waivers from the Houston Texans. Griffin has ties to general manager Scott Fitterer and assistant GM Dan Morgan because of their shared time in Seattle.

Griffin’s arrival comes as the Panthers are monitoring Jaycee Horn’s status on injured reserve. Horn (hamstring) is nearing the end of his 21-practice window — which expires Monday — and he might be available for Sunday’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the team takes its time with the 2021 first-round pick.

Griffin, a 2017 third-round pick, can provide depth behind Donte Jackson, CJ Henderson, Troy Hill, David Long and D’Shawn Jamison during the final six-game stretch if necessary. Griffin, 28, has plenty of experience, having appeared in 86 games (78 starts). He has produced 360 tackles, 63 pass breakups and seven interceptions during his career.

Griffin appeared in 10 games (six starts) for the Texans before being waived on Wednesday. He produced 33 tackles, four pass breakups and an interception during that stint.

With Griffin joining the roster, the 53-man unit still has three openings. Horn, pass rusher Yetur Gross-Matos (hamstring) and safety Jeremy Chinn (quad) are all eligible to return from injured reserve. The team has room for all three this weekend if needed.

Hayden Hurst still not practicing

The Panthers released their Thursday injury report following practice.

Did not participate: S Vonn Bell (shoulder), TE Hayden Hurst (concussion protocol)
