Carolina Panthers

At 1-11, the Panthers are in disarray. What’s next for Tepper and the coaching search?

The Carolina Panthers have an NFL-worst record of 1-11 and now have yet another coaching search to do.

However, just because a team is bad doesn’t mean it’s uninteresting. The Panthers have attracted attention recently on the national front for firing a head coach in midseason for the second year in a row. Last year it was Matt Rhule. This year it was Frank Reich, fired after a 1-10 start, after getting a four-year contract less than 11 months before.

Peter King, one of the most respected NFL writers in the business, called Panthers owner David Tepper “Steinbrenner without the winning” in a recent column and also wrote that “Tepper is Carolina’s biggest impediment to success.”

On the latest episode of The Charlotte Observer’s “Processing Blue” podcast, Observer sports columnist Scott Fowler joins host Langston Wertz to discuss all sorts of Panther-related topics.

Fowler covered Carolina’s 21-18 loss to Tampa Bay on the road in Florida and talks about how the coaching mistakes that hurt the team’s chances in that game. The two also discuss Brian Burns’ ejection.

As for the future, Fowler and Wertz go back and forth on potential Carolina coaching candidates — Ben Johnson? Bill Belichick? Jim Harbaugh? — as well as discussing Tepper, quarterback Bryce Young, Peter King’s column and the final five games of the Panthers’ season.

The 1-11 Panthers play at New Orleans Sunday. The Saints defeated Carolina, 20-17, in the teams’ first matchup this season on Sept. 18 in Charlotte.
