Carolina Panthers cut 2021 second-round pick Terrace Marshall Jr. after three seasons

The Carolina Panthers are moving on from a former second-round pick.

The Panthers waived 2021 second-round pick, wideout Terrace Marshall Jr. on Tuesday, the team announced.

Marshall, 24, had a standout summer in Charlotte under his third different coaching staff in four years. Despite making plays throughout training camp, Marshall was still buried on the depth chart behind Diontae Johnson, Adam Thielen, Jonathan Mingo, and first-round pick Xavier Legette.

Mingo, last year’s second-round pick, also had a breakout offseason with Legette sidelined with a foot injury during training camp. While Marshall’s reps also increased with Legette out, Mingo was clearly positioned in a bigger role than the former LSU playmaker.

Marshall had asked for a trade last season but found no interest on the market ahead of the trade deadline in October. Even with his much-improved production in training camp and preseason, the Panthers came up empty on the trade market.

Marshall caught five passes for 53 yards and a touchdown. He had three catches for 39 yards and the score in the preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills.

Marshall caught 64 passes for 741 yards and a touchdown in his three years with Carolina. The Panthers will save $1.44 million in cap space by releasing him.

That additional cap space will help the Panthers as they continue to rebuild under GM Dan Morgan and head coach Dave Canales.
