After getting his big second contract earlier in the summer, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton said he was pleased to see the same happen Friday for Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson.
Wilson, a former N.C. State standout with two Super Bowl appearances and one championship to his name, signed a four-year contract extension reportedly worth $87.6 million just before the start of Seahawks camp.
Wilson will reportedly earn $31 million as a signing bonus and $60 million in guaranteed money, which mirrors Newton’s extension but averages more per year than the Panthers’ quarterback.
“I’m pretty sure he deserved it,” Newton said. “But he plays for a completely (different) team in a different state. I’m always appreciative of guys who work hard. I’m a firm believer in hard work pays off, and it’s great to see that a guy of his stature, with so much that he’s accomplished, is being compensated for it.”
