More movement on Panthers’ coaching staff: Carolina parts ways with DB coach DeAngelo Hall
The Carolina Panthers continue to shake up their defensive coaching staff.
The team has parted ways with assistant defensive backs coach DeAngelo Hall, league sources told The Observer on Friday. Hall, a former Pro Bowl cornerback, was originally hired by then-head coach Frank Reich during the 2023 offseason.
Hall, despite Reich’s short stint with the team, was retained by head coach Dave Canales as part of defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero’s staff in 2024. Hall worked mostly with cornerbacks, including recently minted Pro Bowl defensive back Jaycee Horn.
Hall is the latest departure from the staff. Safeties coach Bert Watts, outside linebackers coach Tem Lukabu and defensive quality control coach Bobby Maffei were let go shortly after the completion of the 2024 campaign.
Offensive passing game coordinator Nate Carroll has also been removed from his post, according to league sources.
However, as The Observer first reported Wednesday, the team plans to hire Los Angeles Rams assistant defensive line coach AC Carter as the Panthers’ new outside linebackers coach.
A coaching source that previously worked with Carter in the NFL told The Observer that Carter is a “dynamic” coach.
“He is all around a high energy and smart guy, so he will fit for sure anywhere up front,” the source said. “Remember, in (Evero’s) system, the outside guys are pretty much the same as (defensive line).”
Also, according to a league source, the team plans to add former NFL safety Renaldo Hill to the staff in an unspecified role. Hill previously served as a defensive backs coach before a two-year stint as the Los Angeles Chargers’ defensive coordinator. Hill didn’t coach in the NFL last year.
