Carolina Panthers rookie receiver Devin Funchess got his first injury scare as a professional Thursday at Wofford College when an on-field collision left him with an iced left shoulder.

Funchess, a second-round pick out of Michigan, went deep for a Cam Newton pass near the end zone with cornerback Melvin White in coverage. The two got tangled up and Funchess went hard to the ground.

Head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion attended to Funchess, who had trouble lifting up his left arm because of a sore shoulder.

“He came down on his shoulder and he was sore,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “R.V. examined him and made sure he was OK. Turns out he was OK but they did want to put some ice on it.”

Funchess did not return to team drills for the remainder of the day.

In other injury news, rookie linebacker Shaq Thompson was limited in Thursday’s practice as the Panthers continue to slowly bring him back from a hamstring injury.

Thompson worked in individual drills and some team drills before going off to the side and working on the exercise bike.

Offensive tackle Michael Oher, cornerback Charles Tillman and defensive tackle Colin Cole all had veteran days off. Backup offensive lineman Nate Chandler took a “precautionary” day as he continues to come back from offseason knee surgery.
