Mike Brown had his “hello, Spartanburg” moment Sunday when the former Jacksonville Jaguars wideout had easily his best day of training camp.
Brown, who signed with the Panthers during the offseason, ran down a deep pass from Cam Newton and pulled it in with one hand with cornerback Charles Tillman trailing him.
Brown, competing for one of the last receivers spots, later hauled in another pass for a long gain.
Jarrett Boykin, the Charlotte native and former Green Bay Packers wideout, had a solid day, as well. Boykin caught a long pass from Derek Anderson despite tight coverage from Carrington Byndom, and added a one-handed grab on a pass from Joe Webb a short time later.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera said the younger receivers had more opportunities Sunday with Kelvin Benjamin and Jerricho Cotchery getting a break during much of the team work.
Brown, who caught 32 passes for 446 yards and two touchdowns for the Jags in 2013, made the most of his.
“Mike just keeps flashing. He’s doing some nice things,” Rivera said. “He’s an interesting young man that really just caught our attention when he worked out for us in the spring. He had good OTAs, good minicamps and he just continues to excel. We found out today he can catch punts, so he’s going to get some opportunities.”
