Panthers bring back speedy wide receiver, adding to crowded depth chart
Carolina has added a familiar face to its crowded wide receiver room.
The Panthers signed wide receiver/special teams ace Dan Chisena to the practice squad on Tuesday, the team announced. In a corresponding move, the Panthers released defensive tackle Tommy Akingbesote from the practice roster.
As a member of the practice squad, Chisena can be elevated to the game-day roster three times before being added to the 53-man roster.
Chisena, an NFL journeyman, dealt with a calf injury this summer, forcing the Panthers to release him with an injury settlement during training camp. Now recovered from the injury, Chisena will be able to return to the depth role he had last year.
Chisena appeared in six games for the Panthers last season; he was mostly used on special teams. On offense, he caught three passes for 37 yards on offense.
The Penn State alum is known for his speed, especially as a gunner on punt coverage. He is likely to be featured in that role at some point.
Wide receiver Brycen Tremayne and cornerback Akayleb Evans served as gunners during the first two games of the season. In Week 3, Tremayne was replaced by fellow wideout Dalevon Campbell because Tremayne was filling in for Xavier Legette as an offensive starter.
Chisena joins a crowded situation at his position.
First-round pick Tetairoa McMillan headlines a group that also features Legette, Tremayne, Campbell, Hunter Renfrow and Jimmy Horn Jr.
Jalen Coker (quad) is also eligible to return from injured reserve as early as next week.
