Carolina Panthers

Carolina Panthers vs. Green Bay Packers: Our predictions, TV/radio, betting lines

The Carolina Panthers insist that every week represents “one game” — nothing more, nothing less.

But something about this one could mean more.

After all, the Green Bay Packers are legit.

Sunday’s game at Lambeau Field in Green Bay will be a measuring-stick of sorts for the Panthers (4-4), who have won three of their last four but most recently suffered a 40-9, never-in-it defeat to the Buffalo Bills at home. The loss was felt everywhere. Special teams had missed kicks; the defense allowed 216 rushing yards from one player; the offense led by backup Andy Dalton was turning the ball over and appeared generally uninspired.

A refocusing, though, could be arriving. Head coach Dave Canales hinted that a change in the running back rotation could come as early as this week. “We cannot ignore the fact that Rico has been exceptional.” The leadership council met on Monday, too — and such a meeting featured a ton of humility.

The Packers (5-1-1), meanwhile, need no refocusing. They just need to sustain their ways. They’re undefeated at home, quarterback Jordan Love is slowly playing his way into the MVP conversation and their defense has some notable strengths. The Packers only allow 78.9 rush yards per game (third in NFL) and boast a sack rate of 7.12% (13th) anchored by one of the best pass rushers in the league, Micah Parsons.

But who will win?

Observer reporters Mike Kaye and Alex Zietlow, as well as columnist Scott Fowler, answer that question below. Here’s everything you should know ahead of the Panthers’ game with the Packers on Sunday.

Betting info: Panthers heavy underdogs again

The Carolina Panthers are 13.5-point underdogs heading into their game against the Green Bay Packers, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

Such a mark underscores the fact that when the Panthers lose ... they really lose. Their average margin of defeat is 20.25 points. They’ve only covered once in a losing effort — and that was in their 27-22 loss to Arizona in Week 2. Green Bay, too, is 5-1-1 on the year, with four two-score wins to its name.

The game’s over/under is set at 43.5, as of Saturday. Panthers moneyline is +640; Packers moneyline is -950.

The Panthers are 5-3 against the spread this season. The Packers, meanwhile, are 2-4.

Here are some other bets you might find compelling Sunday:

  • Player Rushing Yards — Rico Dowdle. The Carolina Panthers running back has been remarkable since Week 5 and will reportedly get the lion’s share of carries on Sunday. His line for rushing yards is 52.5; seems reasonable to take the over.
  • Touchdown Scorers — Jalen Coker. Riddle me why the Panthers’ defense has better anytime-touchdown odds (+500) than the Panthers’ beloved second-year receiver (+550). This could be the week Coker breaks free, and even if not, the odds are quite friendly. Additionally, the lines are +3000 for “first touchdown” and +2000 for “last touchdown” for Coker.
  • Player Receiving Yards — Tucker Kraft. The Packers’ tight end is having a wonderful year ... and mix that with the Panthers’ occasional struggles to defend tight ends and running backs in the pass game, and that could spell great things for Kraft. His line for receiving yards is 59.5, too, which feels a bit modest.

Game predictions: Who will win? Carolina or Green Bay?

The gap from first to the rest of the field shrunk ever-so-slightly last week. Still, Fowler (6-2) maintains a healthy margin over Kaye (3-5) and Zietlow (3-5) — both of whom will need to take chances to have any hopes of catching up with their canny columnist.

Fowler: Packers 30, Panthers 20. Carolina will hang around for a while for this one, but the Packers — a legitimate Super Bowl threat — have just too much firepower.

Kaye: Packers 31, Panthers 20. Green Bay feels like one of the true Super Bowl contenders in the NFC. The Packers’ offense is dynamic and the defense continues to improve. With a banged up O-line and an unpredictable defense, I’m not sure it matters who is at QB for the Panthers on Sunday. The Packers should win at home in convincing fashion.

Zietlow: Packers 35, Panthers 28. I predicted last week that the Bills would win in lopsided fashion. They were coming off a two-game losing streak followed by a bye. The Panthers, conversely, were due for a regression after three great weeks. This week, after refocusing, I think the Panthers will put up a strong performance. I also think Rico Dowdle will get the majority of the carries and that the defense will play much better against the run. The Packers will still win, but the Panthers will leave Lambeau with their heads held high.
