Panthers defender earns national recognition for performance in win vs. Packers

Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig was named the NFC Player of the Week on Wednesday by the NFL.

According to the team, Moehrig is the first Panthers defender to win the award since linebacker Frankie Luvu in 2023. He is the first Panthers safety to win the award since Roman Harper in 2014.

Moehrig’s honor comes after he produced five tackles (two for loss), an interception and two pass breakups in the Week 9 upset win over the Packers in Green Bay.

From the locker room: Moehrig has a hat trick of big plays at Lambeau Field

Tre’von Moehrig was the crown jewel of the Panthers’ free agency class in March.

He was their top target on the market. Yes, even more so than future New England Patriots defensive lineman Milton Williams.

The front office viewed Moehrig as a potential long-term pillar of the defense. The scouting staff thought his versatile skill set could be a game-changing trait for defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero’s unit.

And through his first eight games with the franchise, he was fine.

He had the occasional big play, but he also had the occasional blunder. At times, he looked like a force. And others, he looked like just another guy.

But, on Sunday against the Packers, he was a legitimate difference-maker.

While he isn’t known for his coverage ability, Moehrig made a pair of big plays with the ball in the air against Green Bay.

In the second quarter, he broke up a big downfield heave from Packers QB Jordan Love to rookie wideout Matthew Golden. Later on, in the third quarter, he picked off another deep shot from Love to wideout Christian Watson.

He rounded out his hat trick of big plays with a fourth-quarter stop of running back Emanuel Wilson, for a loss of five yards, on third-and-goal from the Carolina 8-yard line. That stop for a loss led to a fourth-down stop with the Packers on the cusp of the end zone in a one-score game.

“I’ve always been confident in myself, and not try to put a label on my abilities,” Moehrig said. “But it was a team effort. I caught the ball (on the interception) but all 11 affect that play. So, big shout out to the guys.”

Moehrig’s first interception as a member of the Panthers was a big one. It led to the second scoring drive of the game for Carolina.

Every time the Packers mounted some momentum, the Panthers’ defense had an answer. And Moehrig provided a good portion of the problem-solving for the road team.

“They paid him a lot of money to come here, so I think he’s a great player,” defensive end Derrick Brown said with a laugh.

Moehrig, who signed a three-year, $51 million deal in March, is used in several different ways on defense.

He’ll play box safety, nickel corner and dime linebacker during a single series. He’s all over the place — but in a good way. And his teammates appreciate that aspect of his game, especially when it leads to big plays like the ones he made in the 16-13 upset win over Green Bay.

“That’s just Tre,” Pro Bowl cornerback Jaycee Horn said. “He’s a jack-of-all-trades. He can play safety, he can go down in the box and play linebacker for us, he can cover -- he’s just a playmaker -- that’s why he makes the big bucks. So, it’s great to have him on the team.”
