Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly inches toward return from concussion
Carolina Panthers middle linebacker Luke Kuechly continues to inch forward in the NFL concussion protocol, although his return could be expedited depending on a doctor’s evaluation.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera indicated Kuechly, who showed up at practice Thursday with a baseball cap and cleats and participated in non-contact drills, was scheduled to meet with a doctor Thursday or Friday as part of the protocol. Rivera did not say whether Kuechly was visiting the independent neurologist, who must clear him before he can play in a game.
Kuechly politely declined an interview request in the locker room Thursday.
Asked how he’s feeling, Kuechly said: “I’m getting there.”
Rivera said Kuechly hasn’t suffered any setbacks in his recovery from the concussion he sustained in the first half against Jacksonville on Sept. 13.
Kuechly missed a game for the first time in his career last week against Houston and his status for Sunday’s divisional game against New Orleans remains in question.
Rivera said Kuechly is eager to get back to normal.
“Part of the problem with him is he wants to be in there watching tape and part of the whole thing is you’re supposed to go home and rest,” Rivera said. “So we’ve got to kind of kick him out.”
Panthers outside linebacker Thomas Davis said it was “weird” facing the Texans without Kuechly alongside him.
“He wants to play the game,” Davis said. “Our doctors and everybody are going to do what’s best for him in the long run. And he’s going to make the best decisions for himself as well.
“Hopefully we’ll get him back this week. We’re uncertain right now, but we’ll see. We have a couple more days left.”
