Q&A: Carolina Panthers S Roman Harper
Ten questions about life off the field with Carolina Panthers S Roman Harper:
Q. What do you want to do after football?
A. I’m going to golf. I’m going to be a dad. And that’s about all I’ve got right now. So I’ve got a lot of time on my hands.
Q. Can you play golf for the next 60 years?
A. Yeah.
Q. You wouldn’t be bored or unfulfilled?
A. I would probably be bored and unfulfilled. So I’d probably have to get a job doing something. And it might involve football.
Q. Is there a job you wouldn’t want to do, like coaching?
A. Yeah, I don’t want to coach just because I know how I am. So when I see guys not do right, when I tell them I would lose it. And I know how much time it takes to get your guys prepared. I don’t want to be gone that much from my family. I say I don’t, and then everybody looks at me like, you’ll probably coach.
Q. You do seem to have that gene.
A. Well, I do have the gene. My dad coached 20-some, 30 years. He coached at my high school (in Prattville, Ala.). So he coached me in high school.
Q. What did he coach and what was his style?
A. He was a DB coach. He was passive aggressive, so he was kind of quiet. More doing example stuff because he played ball, too. He’d get mad. Certain things would kind of push him overboard. And I figure I would probably be the same way.
Q. And you’re not interested in going into broadcasting?
A. My dream job really, I would love to be a GM. But I know you have to scout for a very long time and I know they have crazy hours, too. I feel like I would have to do something in football. I feel like what I know what it takes on both sides, whether on the field or off the field, money-wise. I’ve got an understanding of everything, the whole NFL vibe. So I wouldn’t mind being a GM or a liason like a great college team like Alabama (his alma mater).
Q. What did you do during the bye week?
A. I went to San Diego, saw my wife’s family.
Q. Did you go to the beach?
A. No, no beach. I’m not an ocean guy. And the water’s cold out there. So we went to the zoo, chilled out, got some good family time in, ate really good. But it was like way too hot out there. It was like being in Alabama in the summer.
Q. Did you golf?
A. No, I did not golf. I didn’t bring the clubs because I knew I wouldn’t be at the house if I’d brought the clubs. I wouldn’t get any rest. I’d be playing.
