Injury update: Andrew Norwell expected back for mostly healthy Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers second-year offensive guard Andrew Norwell could practice Wednesday for the first time since injuring his hamstring against the Indianpolis Colts more than two weeks ago.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera expects Norwell to go through the installation period and walk-through on Wednesday in preparation for Sunday’s game against Washington, and Norwell may do individual drills.
Norwell injured his hamstring on the first field goal of the game against the Colts and hasn’t played or practiced since. Amini Silatolu, whom the Panthers drafted in the second round of 2012, has started in his place since.
Cornerback Charles Tillman hyperextended his knee late in Sunday’s game at Tennessee but returned on the final drive. Center Ryan Kalil, who missed one game with a high ankle sprain earlier this month, “came out fine,” Rivera said.
Mike Shula says he’s focused on Panthers
Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula has been rumored as a candidate for the head coaching job at the University of Miami.
On Monday, Shula declined to broach the topic, saying he has blinders on as he helps guide the 9-0 Panthers.
“I want to beat (Washington) this week,” Shula said. “That’s my goal to help this team.
“Here’s what I would ask of our players, I don’t care what happens. You stay locked in right now. So if I’m going to ask that from them, I’ve got to do the same thing.”
Panthers donating $250,000 to flood-ravaged areas
Rivera opened his press conference Monday by sharing that the Panthers have donated more than $250,000 to South Carolina high schools’ athletic programs that were affected by the flooding in and around the Columbia area.
The Panthers still have grants of up to $20,000 available for schools to cover lost or damaged items, uniforms, practice equipment, weight training equipment, electricals in the stadium, field repair and other needs.
Impacted schools interested in applying for flood relief grants should contact Peter Vacho in the team’s community relations department at 704-358-7000.
