With the Carolina Panthers keeping an eye on the playoffs, running back Jonathan Stewart will miss his second consecutive game due to a foot sprain.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera ruled Stewart out on Thursday, and the team made it official Friday. It’s possible Stewart misses the remainder of the regular season in order to be fresh for the playoffs, which begin for Carolina the weekend of Jan. 16.

Linebacker David Mayo (hamstring) is also out for the game.

Defensive tackle Kyle Love (concussion) is questionable after meeting with the independent neurologist on Thursday.

Quarterback Cam Newton, who left practice early Thursday to attend to a “positive” personal matter, is probable along with receiver Ted Ginn Jr. (quad) and defensive end Charles Johnson (calf).

Defensive end Wes Horton is back from a four-game suspension but remains on the exempt list. He does not count against the team’s 53-man roster and will not be active this week.
