A day later, there was still little clarity on an odd audible call that Cam Newton made during the 38-10 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula wouldn’t divulge what “Even Janitor” means, or its origin, when he met with the media Monday.

The FOX microphones caught Newton screaming “Even Janitor” to his teammates before the snap. A second later you can hear someone – either a Panthers’ lineman or a Bucs’ defender – asking “is that real?”

“Yes,” Newton says, looking down and to his left.

“It could mean something one week and it could mean totally nothing the next week,” said Shula, who said the call has been in the system off and on in the past year. “That’s another thing he’s really good at, when you’re using no huddle and you have to use words and signals.

“Every team gets covered and a lot of times it’s (the camera) right on top of you and you have to be creative in that regard because teams can pick up on that. We’ve had that happen to us a couple of times this year. He’s got a good imagination.”
