Dave Gettleman of the Carolina Panthers waited nearly 30 years before becoming a general manager. But he only had to wait three years before receiving a league-wide honor.
The Sporting News named Gettleman its NFL executive of the year Monday for putting together a Panthers team that won a franchise-record 15 regular-season games and made the second Super Bowl appearance in club history.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera, who was the Sporting News’ choice for coach of the year, said Gettleman’s honor was well deserved.
“It’s about time. I really do mean that,” Rivera said Monday. “I don’t want to disparage any of the other guys that won the award before him, but Dave deserves it. I’m proud he’s been recognized for the work he’s done.”
