Academy Sports in Concord is hosting a tailgate party Tuesday afternoon to celebrate the Carolina Panthers, who face the San Francisco 49ers in their first home game of the regular season Sunday.

The event is free and open to the public and lasts from 5-7. During the last hour of the party, Panthers wide receiver Devin Funchess will be around to sign autographs.

Funchess, a second round pick from Michigan, caught 31 passes for 473 yards and five touchdowns in his rookie season last year. He was clearly the offensive MVP in the Panthers’ preseason.

The Top Cats, Sir Purr and the PurrCussion drumline will also be there to greet fans and take photos throughout the event, a spokesman said. There will also be family-friendly tailgate games, like cornhole.

Academy Sports is located at 8675 Concord Mills Boulevard. The retailer sells an assortment of sporting gear and apparel, including Carolina Panthers and other team shirts, jerseys and more.

The Panthers play the 49ers Sunday at 1 p.m. at Bank of America Stadium.
