Who’s that talking over this Panthers hype video?

dtfoster@charlotteobserver.com

So, maybe you’ve already seen this Panthers hype video.

The video – which been viewed more than 73,000 times since being published Sunday – was created by someone who goes by the handle NBAMixStudio on YouTube and Twitter (and who, quite incredibly, professes to be not a Carolina fan but a die-hard Houston Texans guy).

It may not be totally kosher with copyright laws, but good grief, is it ever an effective piece of propaganda.

I don’t know the precise source of all the excellent video clips, but the audio is lifted directly from a 2013 “motivational video” that also uses “Why Do We Fall” in the title. You can see it here:

And the audio really is the key. It incorporates four pieces of music by Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer and one by an independent composer named Mark Petrie. But what stands out most are the voice-over clips, a collage of snippets that includes motivational speeches both fictional and non-fictional.

If you haven’t already, go back up and watch that Panthers hype video one more time. While doing so, keep track of how many voices you recognize and whether you know exactly where the clip came from. Then come back here and check your work.

1. “Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done.”

2. “Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.”

3. “The margin for error is so small. I mean, one half a step too late or too early and you don’t quite make it. One half second too slow, too fast and you don’t quite catch it. The inches we need are everywhere around us. They’re in every break of the game, every minute, every second.”

4. “You got a dream? You gotta protect it. People can’t do somethin’ themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want somethin’, go get it. Period.”

5. “Don’t be afraid to fail. You can’t always win, but don’t be afraid of making decisions.”

7. “That most of you say you want to be successful, but you don’t want it bad. You just kinda want it. You don’t want it badder than you wanna party. You don’t want it as much as you want to be cool. Most of you don’t want success as much as you want to sleep.”

8. “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.”

9. “Dig deep down – dig deep down – and ask yourself, ‘Who do you want to be?’ ... Figuring out for yourselves, what makes you happy no matter how crazy it may sound to other people.”

10. “Make a choice. Like, you just decide: What’s it’s gonna be, who you’re going to be, how you’re going to do it. Just decide.”

11. “Why not? Why can’t I be the MVP of the league? Why can’t I be best player in the league? I don’t see why. Why? Why can’t I do that?”

12. “What is it you said to the kid? ‘It ain’t about how hard you hit. It’s about how you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward.’ Get up. Get up. Get up. And don’t ever give up.”

14. “To be able at any moment to sacrifice what you are for what you will become. Most of you won’t be successful because when you studying and you get tired, you quit. ‘I don’t do well in math.’ You’re right – you ain’t never studied. ‘I’m not good at writing.’ ’Cause you have never written before.”

15. “Talent you have naturally. Skill is only developed by hours and hours and hours of beating on your craft. ... If you are not making someone else’s life better, then you’re wasting your time.
