Who is the Canes’ siren sounder during Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals?
The high-pitch wail meant to cut through rain and fierce winds serves another purpose in Lenovo Center.
The pregame storm siren, found under the bright spotlight in Section 229, has been a fixture of the Carolina Hurricanes since it premiered during the 2008-09 season to “supercharge” fans before puck drops, The News & Observer previously reported.
In the past, the lineup of people charged with hyping up the crowd as the “siren sounder” ranges from celebrities, season ticket holders, corporate partners, fans and politicians.
Some Caniacs have speculated online who would serve as the team’s siren sounders during the games, with several hoping for an appearance from 2006 Canes players who won the Stanley Cup.
For Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals, the siren sounders are:
- Eric Staal, former longtime Canes player and prominent team member on the 2006 team, and brother of current Canes player Jordan Staal.
- Kon Knueppel, current NBA player with the Charlotte Hornets and former member of the Duke University basketball team.
Notable past siren sounders include: former Carolina Panther Luke Kuechly, “American Idol” winner and North Carolina native Scotty McCreery, rapper and NC native Petey Pablo, NASCAR superstar driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo and former and current college coaches including Dave Doeren, David Cutcliffe, Kevin Keatts and LeVelle Moton.
The first person to ever sound the siren was former U.S. Senator Elizabeth Dole, The N&O reported.

Games will be shown live on ABC and online at ABC.com, though you will need to share your TV provider and login. You can also stream on ESPN+.
Games 1-4 will be Tuesday, June 2; Thursday, June 4; Saturday, June 6 and Tuesday, June 9. Games 5-7, if necessary, will be Thursday, June 11; Sunday, June 14 and Wednesday, June 17.
All games are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. EST.
