After splitting their last two games on home ice with the IceHogs, the Charlotte Checkers came up short in the series finale, falling 5-1.
The IceHogs found themselves on top quickly as Philip Danault burst out on a shorthanded breakaway and buried a wrister top shelf to put Rockford up 1-0 heading into the first intermission. The IceHogs poured it on in the second, racking up three consecutive goals, capped off by another shorthanded breakaway goal for.
The Checkers finally broke up the shutout bid seven minutes into the third when Mario Lamoureux pounded home a loose puck in front. Charlotte could not mount a comeback, however, and Tanner Kero added a goal for Rockford to seal the victory. The loss snapped the Checkers’ three-game road winning streak, which had been their longest of the season.
The Checkers will look to shake off the loss when they travel to Grand Rapids, Mich., this weekend for two games against the Griffins to close out their season.
