You can buy a Charlotte Checkers ticket for $1.01. Here’s when, and why
Charlotte Checkers officials predict that tickets will sell out for their next game in Bojangles Coliseum.
They have reason to think so.
The Checkers, the city’s American League Hockey team, will host a “Hockey $1.01 Night” on Tuesday.
That means tickets will start at just $1.01 for the game. It also means that during the game — just like a introductory college class, like “Math 101” — there will be programming designed to explain some of the basics of hockey.
“A Tuesday wouldn’t normally be our biggest crowd of the year,” Shawn Lynch, senior vice president of the Charlotte Checkers said. “But when we put on this promotion, every year it’s been our biggest crowd.”
Discounted tickets can be found online via Ticketmaster by selecting the “$1 Ticket Offer” filter at charlottecheckers.com/hockey while supplies last. The game begins at 7 p.m., and doors open at 5:30 p.m.
This promotion began during the 2015-16 season, the same year the Checkers relocated to Bojangles Coliseum. The city’s hockey team spent the previous 10 seasons at Time Warner Cable Arena (now Spectrum Center).
Lynch, who has been with the the Checkers since April 2004, said this promotion aligned with a commitment the organization made to “keep hockey accessible to everyone.”
“It’s a way for us to grow the sport in Charlotte,” he said.
The Checkers have historically boasted some of the strongest fan attendance figures in the AHL. Their first two contests of the 2021-22 season eclipsed the 7,000-mark for attendance.
Their work to embed themselves in the Charlotte community offers big reasons why. This season alone, the Checkers have put on a “Charlotte FC” night — where Queen City club supporters marched into Bojangles Coliseum with their drums and sang CLTFC chants all game — and an inaugural outdoor practice at Truist Field.
These are in addition to the weekly or monthly promotions the Checkers are known for, too: from dollar-beer “College Nights” on Wednesday home games, to various nonprofit nights and more.
But Tuesday’s “$1.01 Night” is uniquely special, Lynch said. It’ll compel people to the Coliseum who may have never been before — and hopefully they’ll have an experience that’ll make them want to return.
“We’re going to use the stoppages during the game to provide facts about the sport of hockey: talk about the rules, maybe talk a little bit about our history in Charlotte,” Lynch said. “We’ll just educate the community that’s there that night on the game of hockey and why it’s important for the Checkers to be here in Charlotte.”
