Ryan gives Checkers victory in final seconds

Derek Ryan scored with just 7.5 seconds left in regulation to give the Charlotte Checkers a 3-2 victory against the San Antonio Rampage on Wednesday night at AT&T Center.

The Checkers (12-11-0-0), who dropped two weekend games at home to the Ontario Reign, came out firing in the first period Wednesday, outshooting the Rampage 10-5 and scoring two goals in just 26 seconds. Brock McGinn, who rejoined Charlotte after a stint with the Carolina Hurricanes, scored at the 12 minute, 57 second mark. David Wolhberg scored at 13:23 off a backhand to put the Checkers up 2-0.

After a scoreless second period, the Rampage (11-6-6-0) regained momentum when Mikko Rantanen scored an unassisted, shorthanded goal to bring San Antonio to within 2-1 about three minutes into the period. Rantanen notched his second goal about 11 minutes later to tie the score at 2-all.

Ryan also had an assist on McGinn’s goal.

The Checkers will now make the short trip to Cedar Park to face the Texas Stars on Friday.
