City Amateur: College golfer rallies on Quail Hollow course set up much like PGAs
It was a memorable way to end the summer for Will Stewart. A collegiate player about to head back to school, Stewart topped off his summer competition Sunday by winning the Charlotte City Amateur at Quail Hollow Club.
Stewart shot a final round 1-over 72 at Quail Hollow, which was set up much like the final round of the PGA Championship, to come from two shots behind to catch and pass second-round leader Stephen Woodard and win his first City Am.
“It’s really cool to win this championship, especially here at Quail Hollow,” said Stewart, 21, a rising junior at William & Mary. “To have played right after the pros played here and to reflect on what they did was really terrific.”
Stewart’s 72 went with a 1-under 70 at Cedarwood Country Club on Friday and an even-par 71 at Carmel Country Club’s North Course on Saturday for a 54-hole total of even-par 213.
Woodard finished second, one shot behind Stewart, with a final round 75 at Quail Hollow after leading at the 36-hole mark with rounds of 71 at Cedarwood and 68 at Carmel North.
Stewart started the final round slowly, making bogeys on two of his first five holes. But his round turned as he approached the turn, making birdies on the par-5 7th, the par-4 8th and the long par-4 9th to complete the outward half in 1-under 34.
Stewart and Woodard were tied going into the back nine. The pair swapped the lead back and forth until Stewart’s par at the treacherous par-3 17th and Woodard’s bogey put Stewart in the lead for good.
“I hit a lot of solid shots on the back nine,” Stewart said.
