Rory McIlroy says he will play in Charlotte’s Wells Fargo Championship
Rory McIlroy, the world’s top-ranked golfer, says he will play in next week’s Wells Fargo Championship at Charlotte’s Quail Hollow Club.
McIlroy told reporters of his plans Sunday after winning the WGC Match Play in San Francisco. He hasn’t informed Wells Fargo officials that he has officially committed to play.
The addition of McIlroy gives the Wells Fargo a boost to what was already a strong field for the Charlotte tournament. Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott and defending champion J.B. Holmes have already committed to play.
There was concern that the Wells Fargo field might not be as strong as usual this year when its dates were moved back two weeks to allow for the match play event at Harding Park in San Francisco. That meant the Wells Fargo is following two of the biggest events on tour – the match play and this week’s Players Championship – with the U.S. Open coming in June.
World No. 3 Henrik Stenson and No. 5 Jim Furyk have also committed to play in Charlotte.
