Rory McIlroy officially commits to play in Wells Fargo Championship

Next week’s Wells Fargo Championship rounded into form Friday when world No. 1 Rory McIlroy officially committed to play in the tournament at Charlotte’s Quail Hollow Club.

McIlroy, who won the Wells Fargo in 2010, joins seven other players in the top 20 who will play in Charlotte, including No. 3 Henrik Stenson and No. 5 Jim Furyk.

Phil Mickelson, ranked 18th, and No. 9 Adam Scott had already committed to play, as had last year’s winnerJ.B. Holmes.

“This is a real testament to how strong this tournament as become,” said Wells Fargo executive director Kym Hougham.

There are some notable absences from the tournament, including Tiger Woods, Masters champion Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Bubba Watson.

But the tournament also has other players who will be making their first appearances in Charlotte, including Charl Schwarzel and Louis Oosthuizen.
