Quail Hollow in good shape for Wells Fargo Championship

After somewhat of a rough winter and early spring, the course at Quail Hollow Club appears to be in fine shape for this week’s Wells Fargo Championship.

“We came out of the spring pretty rough, but over the last few weeks, things have really come around,” said Kym Hougham, the tournament’s executive director.

Some greens have a few, small brown spots, but Hougham said that won’t affect how they play.

“It’s a cosmetics issue, rather than playability,” Hougham said.

Hougham said he has asked experts about the problem.

“I don’t think they know,” Hougham said. “It’s a disease that went up and down the East Coast. And what we see (now) will diminish as the greens are mowed down.”

Notes

▪ The tournament is not a sellout. Tickets will be available throughout the week.

▪ The practice area has been expanded to include a spot where players can work on their short games. The new area is to the right of the 10th fairway.

▪ Erik Compton will conduct a youth clinic at 4 p.m. Tuesday on the practice tee. Compton, who has had two heart transplants, visited the Levine Children’s Hospital on Monday. After the clinic, Compton will throw out the first pitch at the Charlotte Knights-Louisville Redbirds game at BB&T Ballpark.

▪ Big names for Monday’s pro-am included former Charlotte Hornets star and famous dad Dell Curry, as well as former Carolina Panthers general manager Bill Polian. Wednesday’s pro-am will be highlighted by Panthers coach Ron Rivera, Chicago Bears coach John Fox (who still owns a house at Quail Hollow), NASCAR’s Michael Waltrip and Gov. Pat McCrory.
