Charlotte 49ers stay alive in NCAA golf regional
First-round leader Charlotte kept alive its hopes of advancing to the NCAA men’s golf championship tournament in two weeks, shooting a 3-over 291 during Friday’s second round of the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional.
Entering Saturday’s final round, the 49ers are a stroke behind Stanford, which blistered the course at 13-under 275 on Friday, 11 under for the tournament. The 49ers were 3 over the day, but they finished the final six holes at 2 under.
“We have put ourselves in a good position with one round to play,” coach Ryan Cabbage said. “We’re really looking forward to tomorrow’s round. We will be ready to go.”
No. 1-ranked Florida State (6 under) will start Saturday’s round in third, followed by Kennesaw State and Florida, who are tied for fourth at 3 under. Clemson and host North Carolina are tied for sixth at 1 under.
The top five teams will advance to the NCAA championships in Bradenton, Fla.
Friday, Riley Davenport and Thomas Rowland led Charlotte with even-par rounds of 72. Roland is tied for 22nd place and teammate Seth Gandy is tied for sixth after a 1-over 73 that followed Thursday’s 4-under 68.
Charlotte will join Stanford and Florida State on the tee to start Saturday’s round at 8:45 a.m.
