Thursday

Little-known Robert Streb shoots a 65 in the morning, and that score holds up throughout the day. Streb, who has one PGA Tour victory, ended the day with Patrick Reed and Kevin Chappell one stroke back. Six others – Charlotte’s Webb Simpson, Ricky Barnes, Michael Thompson, Stuart Cink, Raleigh’s Chesson Hadley and Billy Hurley III – are another stroke back.

Friday

The second round belongs to Simpson, a Charlotte resident and Quail Hollow Club member. He shoots a 67 for a second consecutive day and ties Streb for the lead at 10 under. Highlights for Simpson are chip-ins for birdie on the ninth and 17 holes.

Saturday

Rory McIlroy makes Quail Hollow history by shooting a course-record 61 and takes a four-shot lead over Simpson. McIlroy breaks or ties four other course records – lowest 54-hole score (198), lowest third-round score, most birdies in one round (10) and consecutive birdies (five).
