College Baseball Roundup: S. Carolina eliminated from SEC tournament

Missouri right-hander Reggie McClain allowed just one unearned run in seven-plus innings and was backed by an offense that tallied 11 hits as the Tigers defeated South Carolina 5-1 Tuesday in an SEC baseball tournament elimination game.

McClain (7-7) limited the Gamecocks (32-25) six hits with four strikeouts. Right-hander Breckin Williams pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts to earn his 13th save of the year. With South Carolina runners on second and third with no outs in the eighth, Williams retired DC Arendas, Kyle Martin and Elliott Caldwell without allowing a run.

Left-hander Jack Wynkoop (8-5) allowed four runs on nine hits in seven innings for the Gamecocks. He hit Brett Bond with a 0-2 pitch to open Missouri’s second inning and Shane Benes doubled to put two runners on. Trey Harris drove in Bond with a single and, after the bases were loaded, Benes scored on a sac fly.

After an Arendas sacrifice fly got the Gamecocks within a run in the third, Missouri (30-26) made it 3-1 in the fourth on Zach Lavy’s single.

ACC

Virginia 11, Georgia Tech 0: Daniel Pinero homered and drove in four runs and Josh Sborz allowed one hit and struck out eight as the Cavaliers (34-19) moved into pool play by ousting Georgia Tech (32-23) in 61/2 innings in the ACC tournament play-in game at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Virginia will face second-seeded Miami (42-13) at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

Big South

Winthrop 8, Campbell 5: Anthony Paulsen’s two-run double capped a four-run seventh and rallied the Eagles (39-17) past the Camels (31-24)in the Big South tournament in Boiling Springs, N.C. Winthrop will take on Coastal Carolina at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday after the Chanticleers topped Charleston Southern 10-0. Campbell, which loaded the bases with two out in the ninth but failed to score, will face the Buccaneers at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Atlantaic 10

Davidson will play Virginia Commonwealth at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the first round of the tournament in Arlington, Va.
