Charlotte’s Brett Boner, Stephen Woodard advance in Mid-Am match play

Charlotte’s Brett Boner, 44, and Stephen Woodard, 45, on Monday advanced to the round of 32 at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Charlotte Country Club.

Boner, the reigning Charlotte City Amateur champion, defeated David Jennings (4 and 2) and will face Claudio Consul Tuesday at 8:45 a.m.

Woodard, a former Canadian Open champion, defeated Jeff Champine (3 and 2) and will play Ben Hayes Tuesday at 8:35 a.m.

Past champion Stewart Hagestad, 27, might have come up short of earning medalist honors over the weekend, but the 2016 winner didn’t have lingering hangovers from the disappointment.

Buoyed by an eagle on the fifth hole, Hagestad, who is from Newport Beach, Calif., cruised to an 8-and-6 victory in the round of 64.

Hagestad joined reigning U.S. Senior Amateur champion Jeff Wilson, 55, of Fairfield, Calif., and stroke-play medalist Stephen Behr, 25, of Florence, S.C., in the next round. Wilson and Hagestad will meet in the round of 32 on Tuesday.

The news wasn’t as good for reigning champion Matt Parziale, 31, a firefighter from Brockton, Mass., who saw his bid to become the third player to successfully defend his U.S. Mid-Amateur title end with a 3-and-2 loss to Argentina’s Andres Schonbaum.
