The Charlotte 49ers’ presence on the San Antonio Scorpions’ soccer team is growing quickly.
Giuseppe Gentile, a former Ardrey Kell High star, signed Wednesday with the Scorpions of the North American Soccer League, joining former 49ers teammates Tyler Gibson and Monbo Bokar on the squad.
Gentile, a striker, is on loan from the Swiss team FC Chiasso, where he had played nine games with one start this season. Gentile played in 2014 for San Antonio, helping the Scorpions to the NASL’s fall championship.
Gibson has been with the Scorpions all season, playing and starting six games as a midfielder. Bokar, a striker who scored six goals for the 49ers last season, also signed Wednesday with San Antonio.
Gentile and Gibson were key members of Charlotte’s team that advanced to the 2011 NCAA championship game.
“I am very excited to be here, great coaching staff, great guys, great veteran guys from last year, so it was an easy decision to come back on loan,” Gentile said in a statement. “I believe I am going to be scoring a lot of goals, creating a lot of space (behind the defense) and getting assists for the team. (I plan on) being a positive influence on everyone.”
The NASL is the second tier of pro soccer in the United States, one step down from Major League Soccer.
