Barry Dyche shoots 67 in Charlotte City Am for share of lead
Barry Dyche didn’t try to do anything spectacular Saturday during the Charlotte City Amateur golf tournament.
That was the right way to play, as Dyche shot a tournament-low 4-under-par 67 during the 56th-annual golf tournament’s second round at the Myers Park Country Club.
Dyche, who has finished 12th or better in the past four tournaments, finished the day at 4-under 138 over the first two days. He now shares the lead with Huntersville’s Patrick Cover entering Sunday’s final round.
“I just kept the ball right in front of me, and tried not to get in any trouble,” said Dyche, who finished tied for fifth in the 2013 Charlotte City Amateur. “The greens were perfect, and the golf course is in perfect condition. I didn’t hit it out of play, hit it in the right spots and made some putts.”
Saturday’s round at Myers Park Country Club proved to be tougher on scoring than Friday’s opening round at Cedarwood Country Club. Friday, 17 players shot under par, while only nine managed to do so Saturday.
Cover, a Hough High graduate now playing at UNC Wilmington, was the only other player to shoot in the 60s. He backed up an opening-round 3-under-par 69 with another 69 on Saturday.
Six players were within three shots of Dyche and Cover heading into the final round, and 12 others were within five strokes as the field was cut to the top 24 players.
Ryan Baucom and Stuart McGoogan are tied for third at 3-under 139, and David Gies II and first-round co-leaders Bennett Smith and Banks Wood are another shot back at 2-under 140.
Quote
“(Myers Park Country Club) is definitely a little more demanding. At Cedarwood, you can get away with a couple of errant shots, and still be able to get in on the green. Here, you’ve got to hit the fairways to get it on the greens.” – Patrick Cover.
Worth mentioning
Jordan Griggs beat out Jay Barnes, Chad Cox, Jason Hawley and Jay Roberts in a two-hole playoff for the 24th and final spot in Sunday’s final round. All five finished the second round at 3-over 145. Griggs and Cox made it past the first playoff hole with birdies, but Griggs took the second hole and the playoff when Cox missed a birdie putt.
