Notes: The Independence is in ninth place in the United Soccer League’s Eastern Conference … Charlotte is still alive for one of the conference’s six playoff berths, trailing sixth-place Pittsburgh by six points with eight games remaining … The Independence has played two fewer games than the Riverhounds and is unbeaten in its past six games (2-0-4), including a 1-1 tie at Pittsburgh last week … Riverhounds defender Ben Newnam (Wake Forest) started the season with the Independence before being signed by Major League Soccer’s Denver Rapids, who have a working agreement with the Independence … The Rapids released Newnam and he was picked up by Pittsburgh and coach Mark Steffens, who coached Newnam for two seasons when they were both with the Charlotte Eagles.
