Former Davidson and Charlotte Catholic goalkeeper Matt Pacifici has signed a contract with the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer. Pacifici, who was undrafted in the recent MLS super draft, was invited to the Crew’s training camp, where he held Real Salt Lake scoreless in 28 minutes in a preseason exhibition.
Pacifici, who transferred to Davidson from Wake Forest, had a career 1.45 goals-against average for the Wildcats. He is one of three goalkeepers with Charlotte connections on pro rosters -- Clint Irwin (Charlotte Christian) is with MLS’ Toronto FC and John Busch (Charlotte 49ers) is with the North American Soccer League’s Indy Eleven after a long career in MLS. Two other former 49ers -- striker Giuseppe Gentile (Fort Lauderdale Strikers) and midfielder Tyler Gibson (Rayo OKC) -- are playing in the NASL.
