Rory McIlroy commits to play Wells Fargo Championship
Two-time champion Rory McIlroy has committed to play in the Wells Fargo Championship May 5-8 at Charlotte’s Quail Hollow Club.
McIlroy, the world’s No. 2-ranked player, won the Wells Fargo tournament in 2010 and ’15 and is the event’s only multiple winner. McIlroy broke 11 tournament records and tied two others in winning the 2015 tournament by seven strokes over Webb Simpson and Patrick Rodgers.
Adam Scott, the world’s sixth-ranked player, committed to play last week. Others who have committed include Charlotte-resident Brendon de Jonge, Wells Fargo 2013 champion Derek Ernst, 2011 champion Lucas Glover, Charlotte native and former Wake Forest star Bill Haas, Gastonia’s Harold Varner III, Charlotte-resident Johnson Wagner and David Toms, who won the first Wells Fargo tournament in 2003.
