Justin Thomas won his first major Sunday, taking the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club with a final-round 3-under-par 68.

Thomas, from Goshen, Ky., birdied the par-3 No. 17 hole Sunday. That overcame his bogey on No. 18. Thomas finished 8-under par for the tournament with a four-round total of 276.

There was a three-way tie for second, at 6-under, between Francesco Molinari of Italy, Patrick Reed of The Woodlands, Texas, and Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa.

Kevin Kisner of Aiken, S.C., who led through three rounds, finished in a tie for seventh, following a double-bogey on No. 18.

Thomas’ assault on the lead started on the No. 10 hole when a putt rolled to the edge of the cup. As Thomas turned away from the hole, the ball fell in for a birdie on the par-5 hole.

Kisner started the day with a one-shot lead. He birdied Nos. 14 and 15, only to shoot a bogey on the par 4 No. 16.

Thomas’ best previous finish in a major was a tie for ninth in this year’s U.S. Open.

This was Charlotte’s first golf major. The PGA of America has already said it intends to return to Quail Hollow for another championship.
