To know: Situated just southeast of Mecklenburg County, Union County is one of the fastest growing counties in North Carolina and possibly the birthplace of President Andrew Jackson, who was born in the Waxhaws, a region that straddled the North Carolina/South Carolina border.
To eat: Stop in at Rock Store Bar-B-Que for chopped pork served out of an old service station in Stallings, or hit Pig-N-Vittles in Monroe for “neo-traditional” ’cue. Stone Table in Monroe offers breakfast all day, or show up in the evening for a four-course meal.
To drink: Union County has gotten in on the craft beer craze with Southern Range, The Dreamchasers and Sweet Union brewing in the area. For a unique weekend getaway, sip wine and stay in a treehouse at Treehouse Vinyards in Monroe.
To do: Get wordy at the Museum of the Alphabet (yes, it’s a real thing) and explore the county’s rich history at the Museum of the Waxhaws. Catch a play or concert at The Batte Center at Wingate University. And get your fancy hats and mint juleps ready for the Queen’s Cup Steeplechase in Mineral Springs each April.
