What is known about the Charleston shooting

▪ Nine people were killed Wednesday evening in a shooting at a historic black church in Charleston. Six females and three males were killed, but names and ages of the victims have not been released.

▪ S.C. Sen. Clementa Pinckney, pastor of the Emanuel AME Church, is reported to be among those killed. The sister of former N.C. Sen. Malcolm Graham was also a victim.

▪ Police are calling the shooting a hate crime. The suspect is a white man, believed to be in his early 20s. Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen said he attended a meeting at the church for nearly an hour before opening fire.

▪ Officials identified the suspect as Dylann Storm Roof, 21, of Columbia. He was arrested Thursday morning in Shelby, about 45 minutes west of Charlotte.
