Firefighters battle large tank fire in north Charlotte

Firefighters battled a blaze in a large Blythe Construction Co. tank in north Charlotte Tuesday morning.

The tank contained liquid asphalt and posed no environmental hazard, Capt. Jackie Gilmore of the Charlotte Fire Department said.

The tank is in the 11000 block of Reames Road, near West W.T. Harris Boulevard. That section of Reames Road was closed as firefighters doused the fire.

The fire started shortly before 9:20 a.m. Twenty-six firefighters controlled the fire in about 70 minutes, Gilmore said. No one was injured, he said.

Fire officials said the fire was accidental due to a mechanical failure.
