Outbound Independence Boulevard closed through Monday night at 6800 block

A water main break will now reroute outbound East Independence Boulevard traffic onto Monroe Road through Monday night, Charlotte Water said.

East Independence is closed at the 6800 block near Wallace Road. The detour had been expected to stay in effect until 7 p.m. Monday.

Photos from the scene show about an eight-foot-long sink hole at the site of the break.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police reported the water line break shortly after 3 a.m.

Monroe Road is one alternate route, but expect backups at traffic lights.
