Burke County infant dies of injuries

A Burke County 3-month-old whose parents were charged with felony child abuse has died of his injuries, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office said.

The infant and his twin brother were hospitalized Sunday, after sheriff’s investigators responded to a report of an infant who was not breathing at a home on Sunset Grill Street in Connelly Springs. First responders performed CPR on the infant at the scene.

The parents, Nicholas Brandon Clark, 20, and Brittany Nichole Hefner, 24, remained in jail Wednesday on $75,000 bail.

Sheriff’s investigators said additional charges are pending now that the infant has died. The infant’s twin was in stable condition Wednesday at Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem.

The couple is accused in court records of committing an assault “that resulted in serious bodily injury, bleeding on the brain and neck injury” to at least one of the infants, reported WBTV, the Observer’s news partner.
